I was just reading ‘happiness professor’ Ruut Veenhoven’s article from 1977 about research that having children doesn’t make people happy, and that not having children doesn’t make people unhappy. Then when you look further on the internet and read reactions to people who are happy to be childless, they get such incredibly negative reactions, especially from mothers who claim to be very happy with life. It looks like those mums feel attacked because other people made other choices than they did. Is it a sort of jealousy? Are they maybe reluctant to admit that indeed their choice to have children didn’t make them happier than they were? I would really like to know why there’s such ferociousness behind those words that those mother are so very vert happy…
